CLEAN GAMEBOY CLASSIC PROSOUND MOD TUTORIAL

keep your headphone jack and speaker in tact~!

before starting this mod its helpful to read the Gameboy Color Prosound mod on the LSDJ wiki (since i reference it)

lameboy's mod is also very helpful! (i also use his volume pot diagram)

01.

open the case with your triwing screwdriver

find one on ebay or play-asia.com

maybe disconnect the two portions of the GB via the ribbon cable

BE CAREFUL - fuck this up and you might lose some screen pixels

02.

dremel a hole for your your 3.5mm stereo jack (1/8inch jack)

THESE cylinder shaped stereo jacks are what you want... componenet # CA-C493

dremel to the bottom left side of the case [see the picture above]

i disconnected the screen PCB (the one with the screen) so i didnt miss and hit some vital circuits~!

just unscrew the regular screws and use a flat head to pry it off - pry it from the bottom away from the screen - the screen is delicate and you can mess it up if you hit it with your flat head

that may give you some time to clean the buttons and maybe replace the screen

03.

remove the PCB that the original headphone jack is attached to (regular screwdriver)

don't clip the wires that are attached to it

04.

there are 2 ways to do this step

04.a.

desolder the capacitor to the left on the headphone PCB [use a desoldering braid!]

[the capacitor that is getting in the way and sticking out to the left]

solder some wire to the original solder points (2 to 3 inches)

wire... thin gauge and thin shielding - remember to pre-tin your wire

resolder the capacitor to the wire !!!make sure you hook the correct wire ends back to the PCB

bend the other capacitor underneath - there is plenty of room for this

04.b.

the other way is to just bend both capacitors underneath the PCB - this is a lot easier - but you run the risk of snapping off a capacitor and you also run the risk of having the case not close all the way because there is a nasty little resistor in the way of getting the one capacitor flush agaisnt the PCB (it can be done though!)

the more you bend the capacitor - the more likely it is to break so... you basically get one or two shots at this

basically its a toss up - if you feel more confident with your soldering skills - try method 04.a. - if you are a daredevil and throw caution to the wind try 04.b.

05.

reconnect the PCB and shove the wired capacitor into the left empty space if you followed step 04.a. - (now we have room~! for our 3.5mm jack)

06.

continue with the prosound mod like its a Gameboy Color but beware the volume pot's points are different (read the LSDJ wiki for this)

wire each point LEFT, RIGHT, and GROUND to each point on your 3.5mm stereo jack

use thin + thin shielded wire - pre-tin your wire and soldering points on the GB~!

* pre left (not used)
* LEFT
* RIGHT
* GROUND

BOTTOM OF GAMEBOY

07.

reconnect the two parts of the GB via the ribbon cable, screw in your 3.5mm jack and close the case

closing the case in this mod is really easy if you use thinly shielded wire

if you ever do a GBC mod get ready to pull your hair out in this stage~!
